What is a Structure Conversion ADU?

Structure Conversions, like converting your existing garage into an ADU, are exactly what they sound like. The Acton ADU team assess and designs an ADU solution that takes advantage of a pre-existing structure on your property. Structure Conversions are unique, in that conditions vary and each project requires different solutions. Design is unique for each conversion, from a structural and interior design standpoint. A structure-specific strategy leads to a successfully permitted the new home.

    How it works

    We use a structured approach to understand you, your project motivations, and what’s possible for your property and budget. We do this utilizing a comprehensive five-step process:

    Step 1: Project Evaluation

    It’s important to understand what’s possible. Regulations on setbacks, location, rear yard coverage, and even materials are changing constantly and we’re here to navigate those complexities so you know what you can build and understand what works for your budget. 

    We learn your needs and motivations and assess the viability of your project. Our job is to evaluate your project at a preliminary level, provide a Project Validation Report at our headquarters, and prepare to conduct a Design Interview for Step 2: Concept Design. Additionally, unique to Structure Conversions, we work with your city or county building and planning departments to design a minimal structural solution.

    Step 2: Concept Design 

    We conduct a Design Interview to align your needs and motivations with architectural and interior design solutions. Based on the interview, our design team creates a site plan, floor plan, and elevations for approval, and we prepare to dive into the details for Step 3: Visual Design.

    Step 3: Visual Design

    We address technical details of the property, as well as conduct our Finishes Meeting. This step is different for every Structure Conversion, as these conversions are always unique to one another. That said, we’ll provide choice selections of floor, tile, countertops, and other finishes that our design team has curated for you based on the Design Interview and budget. This will prepare the project for Step 4: Build Plan & Build.

    Step 4: Build Plan & Build

    We provide a detailed cost for the production, define the schedule, and purchase materials. Simultaneously our design team presents your project and submits the permits, while addressing any building or planning department adjustments. We also lead a Pre-Production Meeting with you at your home and finalize all of the practical details involved with how the build will impact your life. Once complete, we start building your ADU.
