Because our home remodeling business is located in Silicon Valley, many of our clients are tech executives and engineers. Whether they work for technology giants like Apple, Google or Facebook, or one of the many startups in the area, the one thing they all have in common is no extra time in their schedules.
While remodeling their homes may be a priority, many of the people we talk to can’t imagine how they can make it work time-wise. For that reason, we’re constantly refining our home remodeling process to make it as easy as possible for our clients to plan, monitor and collaborate on their projects. In many instances, we rely on technology to support these efforts.
Virtual meetings allow our design-build and project management teams to connect with clients throughout every stage of the process. Video call systems such as FaceTime or Skype are a great way to display visuals without necessitating a face-to-face consultation. Information is also routinely shared via email, calls and texting.
Web-based tools such as Google Drive allow us to provide product approval matrices where clients can review and make their selections and stay on top of the decision-making process. Through Builder Trend web software, we are also able to share plans, schedules, ongoing activity logs, meeting notes and invoices through online channels, as well as photos of each project as it progresses.
As a former tech engineer, I value the array of technology tools that make it easier to connect and communicate with my clients. I’m also a big fan of many of the new smart home innovations such as Nest Protect and Nest Thermostat. But at the end of the day, I’m most appreciative of the yin-yang elements at play in our home remodeling projects.
Although technology enables us to manage our projects and communicate with our clients, the remodeling itself occurs on terra firma and cannot be experienced in a virtual environment. We rely on tangible products and materials, local craftsmen and physical exertion to create a final product designed to enhance the terrestrial lives of our clients. And one of the best parts of my job is seeing the look on the faces of our clients when they set foot in their new living space. So far, nothing in the tech world beats that real-world experience.
